As part of our efforts, we’ve put together a list of four of the premier wineries in Cape May, NJ.

1. Cape May Winery & Vineyard

Right off exit 0 on Town Bank Road lies Cape May Winery & Vineyard, which produces some of the finest wines in New Jersey.

In 1996, Cape May Winery sold its first bottle of cabernet sauvignon. Since that time, the winery has become the Garden State’s fifth-largest-producing winery. Today, the winery consists of farmland encompassing over 150 acres around Cape May. It harvests 26 of these acres across four vineyards, which are home to 11 grape varietals.

Cape May Winery offers semi-private wine tastings for up to four guests at a time. You’ll have to book your tasting online — there’s a button on the home page of the winery’s website to do so, and it shouldn’t take you too long to submit your request.

During a tasting, you’ll get to try six different wines. Meanwhile, a knowledgeable wine associate will provide you with details about each vintage you sample, information about the winery’s wine-making process, and other fun facts.

In addition to wine tastings, the winery offers pop-up dinners where you’ll be able to treat yourself to a multi-course plated dinner specially paired with the winery’s vintages.

Cape May Winery also offers a tapas kitchen which provides a menu of small bites Thursday through Sunday. In summer, the kitchen offers a Sunday menu featuring avocado toast, brioche French toast, and other delicious brunch items.

The winery is open year-round, and its hours may vary depending on the season.

“Good food and nice selection of wines in a pristine setting. The outdoor seating area is filled with a rich array of flowers and plants, with a rainbow of umbrellas and a soothing welcoming fountain. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming too! Love this place! If you are in Cape May, you MUST give it a try!”–Marysol C.

2. Willow Creek Winery & Farm

An award-winning winery in Cape May, NJ, Willow Creek Winery & Farm may be the picture-perfect wine destination for those who don’t want to travel too far from downtown. Willow Creek is a short drive from downtown Cape May and offers picturesque vineyards similar to those you may find in France or southern California.

Meanwhile, the winery provides estate-grown and blended wines paired with charcuterie boards and serves a full grill menu for lunch or dinner. Willow Creek has a 300-seat rustic hall seating room where you can try wine and sangria by the flight, glass, or bottle.

Additionally, Willow Creek hosts group tastings, with each one lasting approximately 30 minutes and giving you the chance to try three wines. For a self-guided tasting, you can pick up a table flight consisting of three 3-oz. wine pours. Soon, Willow Creek plans to offer a 45-minute vineyard tour to teach guests about its farm’s history, the types of grapes it grows, and Cape May’s unique microclimate.

Willow Creek is open daily throughout the year.

“Outstanding winery with amazing spaces! All the wines were excellent (we drank as much as we could!) and the food we sampled was very tasty. The winery is situated on beautiful grounds with several spots to sit and enjoy a glass. We did not eat in the restaurant but the menu looked very appealing and the dining area looks great. If you are in Cape May, definitely make time to visit.”–Doug White

3. Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery

Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Todd and Kenna Wuerker, Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery has been offering highly rated Cape May Peninsula wines for more than a decade.

Hawk Haven is located on South Railroad Avenue in Rio Grande, which is roughly a 10- to 15-minute drive from Cape May. The winery’s lineup of wines includes white port-style, méthode champenoise brut, méthode ancestrale sparkling wines, and many other varieties.

You can try these wines as part of a guided tasting, which allows you sample and learn about six different vintages. If you want a snack to complement your wine, Hawk Haven offers seasonal cheeses, charcuterie, and accoutrement a la carte.

In terms of events, 2023 marked the eighth season that Hawk Haven hosted its summer Rootstock vineyard concert series, which featured performances from musicians from across the country. You can also sign up to be a Friend of Hawk Haven to stay up to date on the winery’s upcoming events, new wine releases, and special discounts.

Hawk Haven is open every day at 11 a.m., with its wine bar and tastings available daily.

“The wine tasting was nice; the sommelier/guide was friendly, knowledgeable and answered all the questions my husband and I had. We were allowed to walk around the vineyard after the tasting, and then we stayed for outdoor seating. Very relaxing environment and the wine tasted good. Would visit again.”–Anna Cortez

4. Jessie Creek Winery

Based in Cape May Court House, Jessie Creek Winery offers wine tastings and pairings, a gourmet market, and live entertainment within a 20-minute drive of Cape May.

Dr. Bruce Morrison is the brainchild behind Jessie Creek. Following a tour of the vineyards of Napa Valley, Dr. Morrison enrolled in the Philadelphia Wine School in 2005. Two years later, Dr. Morrison came across the site that would eventually become Jessie Creek while riding his motorcycle on Route 47.

From here, Jessie Creek opened its doors in 2010. In the years that followed, the winery has earned a reputation of excellence, thanks in part to its boutique wines and commitment to customer service.

When you visit Jessie Creek, you’ll be able to try a self-guided flight made up of five curated wine samples or vintages you select on your own. You can pair your wine with cheese, charcuterie, crackers, chocolates, jams, dips, chips, and pretzels from the winery’s gourmet market.

Jessie Creek also offers year-round musical performances, an art gallery, and seasonal wine club events.

Most days, Jessie Creek is open at 11 a.m. but may be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in winter.

“Really great place! The staff were all incredibly nice and great atmosphere. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating with beautiful views of the vineyard. They had lots of wine options and sampling options, and everything we had was really good. Definitely will be back!”–Jaclyn Hayner
